I am singularly honoured to have been invited by the G 25 to deliver the opening remarks of this forum on Islam in a Constitutional Democracy. At the same time I am thankful to be the guest of a group of distinguished personalities that has come together to address various issues relating to the administration and application of temporal and religious laws while maintaining the peace, stability and harmony of our multiracial and multi-religious country. I would, therefore, like to record my sincere appreciation for their having considered me to do the honours.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am singularly honoured to have been invited to deliver the keynote address to signal the start of the National Unity Youth Fellowship Conference jointly organised by IDEAS and Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research. The theme – Nation Building, Unity and the Malaysian Dream: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow – is apt; apt because it summarises the reason for being of politicians of whom I am one. I also think that this conference provides the appropriate forum for a meeting of minds to address the socio-economic dysfunctionality afflicting our beloved country today.

Today, 14 July 2015, marks the 40th day of the passing of my dear wife. As I overcome the sadness of her absence, I feel freer to reflect upon and address the goings on in Malaysia during the last several months.

2. We are being constantly bombarded with an overdose of news about the sorry state of our national finance. Controversies abound and purported mega financial scandals are being discussed and gossiped over social media. Gripes about this situation are making the round. Not least is the dire strait that our sovereign fund, 1MDB, finds itself in.

Bismillahhirrahmannirrahim, Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, and a very good morning.

My dear friends, I am truly happy and honoured to be with you today and feel greatly touched by the warm and vibrant welcome I received earlier. It makes me so glad and happy that I made this decision to attend and to participate in this special conference and to witness the momentum that is being generated in raising the voices of the moderate silent majority. Thank you.

I was first approached some time last year by the President and Vice President of Harmoni Malaysia to launch this new association and to deliver the keynote address at this first conference of theirs. To be frank, I was at first hesitant to be involved because my other commitments, but the noble objects for which the association was formed struck a chord with the emerging sentiments of the times in the national landscape. It was time for the voices of moderation and reason to be aired. It was time for us to be more aggressive in promoting better understanding and harmonious living amongst our people. It was time to make a stand and I accepted the invitation to be the advisor of the association and to be here with you today.
